Home prices: How they are faring in six 2012 swing states

Home prices are recovering in some regions, fluctuating in others, and stuck in the basement in still others. How they are faring may yet be an important factor in the 2012 presidential election. Here's how home prices in metro areas in six swing states compare with those at the housing market's peak in 2006.

4. Detroit – Recovering

The woes of the Motor City as a result of hardship in the auto industry and the housing market are legendary. However, Detroit has seen a larger jump in home prices – 9 percent higher than a year ago –  than any other metro area in a swing state that is included in the Case-Shiller index. It still has a long way to go, though, because prices at one point were down 42 percent from the 2006 peak.
