Reader recommendation: An Army at Dawn

Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.

I just finished reading the first two books of Rick Atkinson's trilogy, An Army at Dawn (which won a Pulitzer Prize) and The Day of Battle, and will now start on the third, The Guns at Last Light. His research into the World War II battles includes letters and diaries of military personnel, from privates up to generals. The mistakes made by the Allies were hard to fathom, but the bravery and determination of the soldiers led to victory. In light of contemporary concerns as to whether the US should intervene in atrocities around the world, it makes me wonder if the thousands of deaths in Word War II (some by friendly fire) could have been avoided if we had stopped Hitler sooner. I heartily recommend these books to all.
