4. "The Illuminations," by Andrew O’Hagan

Photographer Ann Quirk and her grandson Luke team up in O’Hagan’s spare but lovely exploration of the delusions of storytelling. Back home in Scotland after fighing in Afghanistan, Luke helps his grandmother face a mystery from her past in a novel in which some pretty coarse language (the military scenes) belies the story’s essentially sweet nature.
