Read these books in 2018

Need some help with selecting new books this year? The Monitor asked four bookstores what books they think will excite readers in 2018. These 13 recommendations are from four independent bookstores across the United States: Prairie Lights in Iowa City; the Strand in New York; Off the Beaten Path in Steamboat Springs, Colo.; and Parnassus Books in Nashville, Tenn. (The Monitor has not reviewed these selections.)

8. 'I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death' (Feb. 6) by Maggie O’Farrell

“I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death” by Maggie O’Farrell, Knopf, 304 pp.

“I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death” (Feb. 6) by Maggie O’Farrell was recommended by Karen Hayes, managing owner of Parnassus Books in Nashville, Tenn.

Ms. Hayes says this is a favorite of fellow Parnassus Books owner and author Ann Patchett – who penned 2016’s “Commonwealth.” Maggie O’Farrell’s memoir recounts 17 near-death experiences at different points in her life.
