2. 'The Bridge Ladies,' by Betsy Lerner

The Bridge Ladies Betsy Lerner Harper Audio 8 hours and 51 minutes

(Read by Orlagh Cassidy; Harper Audio; seven CDs; nine hours)

This nonfiction title details the lives of the women in the author’s mother’s bridge club. Lerner set out to get to know these women and managed to learn more about her distant mother than she expected. The book is wryly humorous from beginning to end. Lerner eventually becomes a bridge lady herself. Narrator Cassidy sometimes slaps on the Jewish mother shtick a bit thickly, but she captures the energy and sharp humor intended by the author.
