2. 'All the Old Knives,' by Olen Steinhauer

The novel by "The Cairo Affair" writer Steinhauer follows CIA officers Henry Pelham and Celia Harrison, who were romantically involved years earlier, when terrorists took hostages in Vienna and the CIA became involved. Today, in the novel's present, the two are no longer together, but both still wonder how the CIA's handling of the emergency went wrong. "It's terrific," says Nelson. "[A] really good spy novel."
