10 best fiction books of 2014

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library,” wrote Jorge Luis Borges. It’s a lovely thought, particularly as it suggests that those of us who give and receive books as gifts are actually exchanging slices of heaven. In that spirit, here are the 10 fiction titles that the Monitor’s book critics found the most celestial in 2014.

1. "Lila," by Marilynne Robinson

Pulitzer Prize winner Marilynne Robinson returns for the third time to the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa, this time to tell the story of Lila, the young bride of the elderly Rev. John Ames. (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 272 pp.)
