4. 'Liberty's Torch,' by Elizabeth Mitchell

"Three Strides Before the Wire" writer Mitchell tells the story of the construction of the Statue of Liberty and the man who envisioned it, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who received help from such figures as Joseph Pulitzer and Victor Hugo. "Everything we learned about the Statue of Liberty in school is shot," Nelson says of the book. "It was not this perfect little story."
