After her mother’s death, Grace is sent to live with her grandmother, a woman she’s never met who once sent her pregnant teenage mother away. Not wanting to be disloyal to her mother, Grace insists on sleeping outside in the shed and refusing her grandmother’s food. She’s afraid she’ll be sent away if she makes a big enough mistake one day, too. But it’s hard for Grace to keep her defenses up as she realizes her grandmother has changed and the town starts to feel more like a real home. This is a wonderful and moving story with similarities to Cynthia Voigt’s "Homecoming." (Ages 10 to 14)
