25 of the best new middle grade novels

These titles are the very best of new middle grade novels released so far this year.

6. 'A Creature of Moonlight,' by Katherine Hahn

Marni’s mother was executed by her own brother for going into the forest and returning with a child who was half dragon and half human. Now the magical forests are encroaching on human dwellings, and Marni’s uncle – now the king – worries that her dragon blood may be the cause. When her beloved grandfather dies, Marni is brought to live at the king’s court, where her life is at risk.

Meanwhile, the king’s rivals – sensing a useful ally in Marni – are competing for her hand in marriage. She wants none of it and finds herself increasingly drawn to the freedom and wildness offered by escape into the forest. Hahn’s fantasy world is richly detailed; her prose is lyrical and lovely. "A Creature of Moonlight" is geared at more advanced readers and seems destined to become a fantasy classic. (Ages 12 to 17)
