25 of the best new middle grade novels

These titles are the very best of new middle grade novels released so far this year.

4. 'The Night Gardener,' by Jonathan Auxier

"The Night Gardener" is a frightening Victorian-style ghost story about two impoverished Irish siblings who find employment in a creepy, neglected mansion the locals warn them to avoid. Geared at more advanced readers, the old-fashioned descriptive prose in this narrative may be harder for younger children to follow. It’s also the darkest, scariest fantasy novel included here and it features some of the best writing found in contemporary children’s literature. (Ages 11 to 15)
