8. 'The Naked and the Dead,' by Norman Mailer

Published in 1948, "The Naked and the Dead" came out only a few years after the end of World War II. Based on Mailer's experiences in the Philippines, the novel explores the dehumanization of war as well as the interactions of soldiers in battle for the Japanese-occupied island of Anopopei.
