9. 'Maus,' by Art Spiegelman

This unusual, semi-autobiographical story was one of the first graphic novels to receive academic attention. The book depicts the struggles of the author against his estranged father, a holocaust survivor. The narrative is split between the author's attempts to interview and reconcile with his father, and flashbacks to his father's experiences in World War II. Taking full advantage of a semi-fantastic comic medium, Nazis are drawn as cats, and Jews as mice.
