5. 'Empire of the Sun,' by J. G. Ballard

A young British boy named Jamie is living with his parents in Shanghai. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, however, Japanese troops occupy the international sector of Shanghai and Jamie is separated from his parents. After attempting to survive on his own, he surrenders and is put in the Lunghua Civilian Assembly Center, an internment camp for Americans and Europeans. This novel is based on the author's experiences in the camp.
