The sound recordist for "Downton," Alistair Crocker, has to be careful about the balance of sound in the show. Every actor wears a microphone so they can be heard clearly, but some environments present problems with the extraneous noise that takes place. For the kitchen, "Downton" crew put foam on chairs, dishes, and the actors' feet so there isn't too much sound. "It's easy to add in the sound of a plate being put on the table, but it's difficult to get rid of it if it's over someone's dialogue," Crocker said.
