When Orr arrived at his first NHL training camp with the Bruins, he checked into the team hotel and discovered that his roommate was none other than team captain Johnny Bucyk. The thought of a veteran sharing a room with an 18-year-old rookie would be far-fetched today, but these were simpler times. Still, Orr was taken aback to be thrust into such company and introduced himself by saying, “Hello, Mr. Bucyk, pleasure to meet you.” Bucyk, whose nickname was the Chief, immediately insisted they be on a first-name basis, which Orr says was the start of a great friendship. Bucyk, Orr found, had a good sense of humor, was even-keeled, and like Orr's parents, set a great example more through his actions than through speech.
