9. 'MaddAddam,' by Margaret Atwood

This new book by "The Handmaid's Tale" writer Atwood is the third and last book in her trilogy which also included "Oryx and Crake" and "The Year of the Flood." In "MaddAddam," characters including Toby, Ren, and their friend Amanda, are struggling to survive a flood. A new species known as the Crakers have come to stay with them and it's fallen to Toby to tell the Crakers how they came to be and how a scientist created them. Meanwhile, a group named the MaddAddamites must fight the cruel Painballers. Atwood has "some creepy, very definite views about the future and the role of the individual in the society," says Nelson.
