Philipp Meyer's The Son is the kind of intelligent, you-can't-put-this-down type of read ideal for the last weeks of summer. Meyer, author of "American Rust," has produced a riveting frontier novel that can stand alongside classics by Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy. The book tells the story of Eli, or Tiehteti, as his captors rename him, who was kidnapped by the Comanche at the age of 12. Eli becomes an equal opportunity killer, as first a Comanche warrior, then a Texas ranger. His story is raw but compelling and rich with history and atmosphere.
