10 best books of August: the Monitor's picks

Here are the 10 titles the Monitor's book critics are recommending this month.

6. "Let Freedom Ring," by Kitty Kelley

Coffee table books are usually more ornament than depth charge. But Let Freedom Ring, celebrity biographer Kitty Kelley’s sober presentation of previously unpublished photos by Look magazine staffer Stanley Tretick, is both substantial and extremely moving. Published to mark the 50th anniversary of the Aug. 28, 1963 March on Washington, Kelley’s lean text is respectfully subordinated to Tretick's largely joyous and strikingly candid images. The fact that this book arrives roughly two months after the Supreme Court decided to turn back to some states voting rights former President Lyndon B. Johnson made federal law gives “Let Freedom Ring” a particularly powerful resonance. You can read the Monitor's full review of "Let Freedom Ring" here.
