Is A.N. Dyer, the reclusive novelist at the center of David Gilbert's new novel & Sons, meant to evoke J.D. Salinger? Perhaps, but that's not really the point in this sharp, funny, knowing send-up of New York's Upper East Side literary scene. The book begins with the elderly Dyer emerging from his cloistered existence to deliver a eulogy for an old friend. It spirals off into a story of Dyer, his three sons, family dysfunction, the literary world, and the elusive (or delusive?) nature of success. Read our full review of "& Sons" here.
