6. "A Sand County Almanac," by Aldo Leopold

Leopold traces the seasons and months of Wisconsin, and the ecology of many of America's Western and Midwestern states. "A Sand County Almanac" is a book that appeals not only to conservationists and hunters but also to readers of all stripes. Leopold is a writer as well as a naturalist and he avoids the pitfall of some nature writers by never allowing description to overshadow his narrative. Published in 1949, "A Sand County Almanac" deserves its place as part of the unofficial nature-writing canon.
