"It becomes cringeworthy when that person carries on chatting while ignoring the checkout person," he wrote. "Inevitably, they'll need to answer a question... to the checkout clerk, 'Okay, sorry, what did you say?' As in, 'I'm ready to pay attention now that I've wasted everyone else's time.' It's rude to just ignore someone who is helping you. Yes, it's their job. And it's yours to be nice and pay attention."
