Lahiri was born in London to an immigrant family from India. Her family then moved to the US when Lahiri was three. Much of her work deals with large themes like family, duty, freedom, and the immigrant experience in America. Her debut short story collection, "Interpreter of Maladies," was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2000. Her 2003 novel "The Namesake," which was made into a movie in 2006, explores the way that the children of immigrants can feel when they are "caught between cultures."
