Members of the Navajo tribe participated in the filming of "The Searchers," with many serving as extras and some women doing laundry or performing other housekeeping tasks. They reportedly liked both Ford and Wayne. Wayne talked with them regularly and, early on in the production process, offered the use of his private plane to take a two-year-old tribe member, a little girl diagnosed with both double pneumonia and measles, to the closest hospital which was 100 miles away.
