Winton Hoch, who often worked with Ford as his director of photography and did so on "The Searchers," spoke admiringly of how Ford handled the beautiful scenery in which he was filming. "In Monument Valley he avoided the temptation to shoot nothing but breathtakers," Hoch said. "He had only an occasional beauty shot. It's like diamonds. They are very valuable because they are rare. If the streets are paved with them, then they would be worthless."
