11 practical or unusual books for professional – and aspiring – writers

Here are 11 useful titles for anyone hoping to make a living through the written word.

7. "You Can’t Make This Stuff Up: The Complete Guide to Writing Creative Nonfiction from Memoir to Literary Journalism and Everything in Between," by Lee Gutkind.

You Can't Make This Stuff Up has a lot of practical information, even if it is a bit too self-help-oriented for my taste. There are sections on things like anxiety and time management, and, well, the author explains his approach in the introduction. He states that the basics will be outlined, “along with the passion, the spirituality, the painful frustrations, and the irreplaceable rewards of the creative nonfiction way of writing and living.” I would recommend this one to genre newcomers with one really big caveat: If you’re the sort of person who rolls your eyes when words like “spirituality” and “passion” appear in an advice manual, skip this one and stick with "Storycraft."
