30 banned books that may surprise you

The following books may seem harmless to most readers, but they all made it onto banned books lists at one time or another.

4. Slaughterhouse-Five

Kurt Vonnegut's 1969 novel about a shell-shocked World War II vet who becomes "unstuck in time" has been repeatedly banned from school libraries in the United States, even as recently as 2011.  In 1973, school board members in Drake, North Dakota, famously disposed of 32 copes of the book by burning them in the local high school's coal burner. The novel had been assigned to a sophomore English class, and officials confiscated it from students, even going as far as searching their lockers, when the class was about a third of the way through.
