In November 2011, a member of the coaching staff, Fran Ganter, came to the house with an envelope for Paterno. The envelope contained a phone number for John Surma, who was the vice chairman of the Penn State Board of Trustees. When Paterno called, Surma said, "This is John Surma. The board of trustees have terminated you effective immediately." Paterno hung up, but his wife, Sue, called back. "After sixty-one years, he deserved better," she said, then hung up as well.
