In November 2011, the crisis manager hired by Paterno's family after the Sandusky scandal broke read the statement that had been prepared to the family. Part of it included the phrase "With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I'd done more." Then-director of communications and branding for football, Guido D'Elia, said he thought the phrase sounded like it would be misquoted. "It's how I feel," Paterno told him. "I do wish I had done more. I thought I did what I was supposed to do, but you look at it now, everything that's happened – I do wish."
