Although Sterne says that he will narrate the "life and opinions" of his hero, you might be surprised to find that by the fourth volume out of nine, you are still immersed in Day One of his hero's life. This is due to a combination of the narrator's many wonderful divergences from the story line and something that he calls "unforseen stoppages" – an elaboration of the idiosyncratic mannerisms of his family members and their close friends.
