Schrader said that his favorite line in his screenplay for the 1976 film "Taxi Driver" is one of the first ones delivered by star Robert De Niro, "I do not believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention." "That's one of the first things he says, and then he proceeds for the next hour and a half to do just that," he said. "I didn't write the best line in 'Taxi Driver,' which is 'You talkin' to me?' Bobby did."
