A boy named Thresh was chosen as the male tribute from District 11 when Rue was selected for the female slot, and Katniss doesn't see him much during the Games until she is attacked by Clove, another tribute who teamed up with Cato and others. Clove knocks Katniss over and, holding a knife, is about to kill her and also insults Rue. Thresh overhears this and grabs Clove, attacking her and saving Katniss. To thank Katniss for staying with Rue as she died, Thresh doesn't kill Katniss and urges her to run before Cato arrives.
