After being pursued by other tributes including the vicious Cato and Glimmer, the female tribute from District Four, Marvel, Clove, and – to Katniss's surprise – Peeta, Katniss escapes up a tree and is able to stay up there since the branches can't hold the weight of the other tributes. However, the other six wait at the base of the tree for her to come down, and Katniss has no idea what to do. Then she sees a young tribute named Rue, a small girl who reminds Katniss of her sister, who is pointing towards a nest near Katniss, which Katniss realizes is full of the wasplike tracker jackers. Katniss saws off the nest and it goes after her pursuers, enabling Katniss to get away.
