Director Douglas McGrath's 2002 film version of the Dickens novel about Nicholas and his struggle with his cruel uncle, Ralph Nickleby, won praise from critics for its ensemble cast and fast-paced adaptation. "Sons of Anarchy" actor Charlie Hunnam played Nicholas, with Christopher Plummer co-starring as the villainous Ralph and Anne Hathaway cast as Madeline Bray, a woman with whom Nicholas falls in love. Tom Courtenay appears as well, playing Nicholas's friend Newman Noggs. More memorable appearances: Jim Broadbent, Alan Cumming, Nathan Lane, Juliet Stevenson, and Timothy Spall all pop up in assorted roles.
