It was a teacher, Doris Jones, who brought Broadway legend Chita Rivera to an audition for George Balanchine at the School of American Ballet. Rivera got nervous as they entered the building and she saw the other girls auditioning. "'Conchita, stay in your lane,'" Rivera remembers that Jones told her. "'Don't worry about the beautiful long-limbed girls lining up next to you for the auditions; be who you are!' I never forgot it."
