Through ‘Couples,’ Updike provides a glimpse at the underlying hedonism that dictated American suburban life in the 1960’s. One reviewer describes the main character, Piet Hanema, as “a character too ordinary in his fears and impulses to be called a hero and too privileged and single-minded to label an Everyman.” Hanema’s neighborhood and social circle becomes a hotbed of adultery--in which he is a participant. In the novel, the moral chaos of the plot is not without consequences.
