Sochi Olympics week one: 5 athletes who have won hearts

A few Team USA athletes sparked global attention by things other than their Olympic prowess (though that helped too). Here are five Olympians who caught our eye this week.

Curler Ann Swisshelm doesn't let age get in the way of her competitive fire. At 45, she is the oldest member of the 230-person US Olympic team. Swisshelm is a seasoned competitor, having first picked up the sport when she was ten. These are her second Winter Games, after the US women’s curling team placed fourth in Salt Lake City in 2002. She is planning on retiring from the sport after Sochi.

Here’s how Swisshelm described her approach to remaining a competitive athlete: "It's about paying attention to your body, training smarter because harder is not an option, and knowing that your mental game can best a younger opponent's physical one,” she wrote in her questionnaire on the US Olympic Committee website. "Also, my go-to recovery drink makes a difference – there's nothing like chocolate milk to help you feel like a kid."
