The spike is a shot struck with such great downward force as to be virtually unreturnable. Skilled players can sometimes “dig” these balls off the floor in the backcourt, but the most effective strategy used against them is to have two defenders time their jumps so as to form a wall that blocks the spike. Part of the challenge of executing a successful spike is that the player may not hit the net on the shot’s follow-through.
