At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Joan Benoit Samuelson became the first woman to win the Olympic marathon.
Though considered the favorite, Samuelson underwent arthroscopic knee surgery 17 days before the American women’s qualifying trails. Her recovery was faster than expected, and not only did she ultimately win the gold, she ran the 26-mile race with a time of 2:24:52. Today, her time still remains the fastest Olympic marathon for an American woman.
