Sunni-majority, Sunni-controlled Egypt struggled between concern about Iran’s nuclear program and concern about how the world's most-populous Arab nation would react if they found out their government was seeking to halt Iran’s ascendancy. According to cables released Sunday, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak told US Sen. John Kerry (D) of Massachusetts that Iran was a known state sponsor of terrorism and that he backed the idea of sanctions. However, “I cannot say it publicly. It would create a dangerous situation,” he reportedly told Mr. Kerry.
