Charitable organizations strive to touch lives, and that’s exactly what the J. Paul Getty Trust seeks to do through “presentation, conservation, and interpretation of the world’s artistic legacy.” In 1948, oil tycoon and art lover J. Paul Getty donated a number of pieces from his personal collection to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; five years later, he started his own museum open to the public. With $10.4 billion in assets, according to the Foundation Center, the trust today administers two locations of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Getty Center in Los Angeles houses European and American pieces, while the Getty Villa in the Pacific Palisades is home to works from ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. Other components of the trust include research opportunities and conservation activities. This year, almost 600 individuals applied for 40 spots in the Getty scholars program.
