The world's top universities in 2012

British-based higher education consulting firm Quacquarelli Symonds released its annual global ranking of universities this week. Here are the top 10.

9. Princeton University

The first of three Ivy League schools to crack this year’s top 10, Princeton is one of nine American universities to have been founded before the country itself. Per student, it has the largest endowment of any university in the world. That helps explain how it’s become such a dominant school in many of the humanities and social sciences. Its top program this year? History and archeology – the Princeton departments in those fields are the third best in the world.
