5. New media's growing role

Worldwide, social media and new media could be game-changers, with social media services such as Facebook and Twitter and thousands of citizen journalists – essentially anyone with a smartphone – contributing a steady stream of reports about the uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia, and Syria. Some countries, such as Russia, China, and Iran, have placed a firm lock on better-known social media services, but new social media sites are being created all the time.
