It was Egypt that granted the Shah a place to rest in peace after his government was overthrown in 1979. The Shah, who died not long after arriving in Egypt, was previously in Panama – but left in a hurry when an Iranian government official showed up with a 450-page extradition request that demanded he be returned to Iran. The Shah left for Cairo before he could find out whether the Panamanian government would comply with the request. He died in Egypt in 1980.
