Almost 2 million acres of land were deemed unsuitable for farming following the Chernobyl disaster, according to the Guardian, and an additional 1.7 million acres devoted to timber production were taken out of commission. Some of that land has been gradually returned to agricultural use, but the cost of growing food there is high because of the extra steps needed to ensure food is not contaminated. Lingering concerns about radiation also hurt the sale of crops harvested in the area.
