The country’s civil war technically only lasted for a few weeks in 2002. A peace accord was signed in 2003, but that collapsed and spates of violence lasted well into 2004. A lasting peace accord was finally signed in 2007. However, the second agreement did little to resolve the underlying issues that led to the eruption of war in the first place. The country remained essentially divided between the north and south and discrimination against foreigners only grew. Gbagbo remained in power well past his mandate and UN and French troops remained in the country in a peacekeeping capacity.
