World War I marked a transition from the era of horses and mules to the era of tanks and trucks. Animals were still widely used in the war – camels in the Middle East, horses across Europe, and dogs in the trenches to act as scouts, bomb sniffers, and casualty locators. One American pit bull, Sergeant Stubby, warned soldiers of the presence of mustard gas and nabbed a German spy. He was the most decorated dog of the war. It was a dangerous war for animals, though: 8 million horses alone perished in the conflict.
