Although an average modern big-league bat weighs 32 ounces, Ruth wielded perhaps the heaviest bat ever used in the majors when he swung a 54-ounce hickory monster early in his career. Gradually, however, he went to lighter and lighter bats. The one he used to belt the first home run in newly-built Yankee Stadium (“the House that Ruth Built”) in 1923 weighed 46 ounces, and the one he clouted a record 60 homers with in 1927 was an even lighter 40 ounces. In his final two seasons, Ruth chose bats that weighed 37 or 38 ounces.
