Forty-seven years after the first Super Bowl was played in Los Angeles before a less-than-capacity crowd, let’s look back at some of the ways the NFL has changed.

13. Referees with wireless mikes

Referees were first equipped with cordless microphones in 1975 so that they could announce to fans in the stadiums and TV viewers penalties and various rulings. This can be a tall order, since it’s one thing to know the rules, but quite another to clearly communicate rulings to millions of fans. The result, however, has been greater fan enjoyment and understanding of what's happening on the field.
