When the Super Bowl era began with the 1966 season, the National Football League had 15 teams. A merger with the American Football League, which first combined the standings of the two leagues in 1970, brought the total to 26 teams. Since then, six expansion teams have brought the total to 32:

New Orleans Saints, 1967

Cincinnati Bengals, 1968

Seattle Seahawks, 1976

Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 1976

Jacksonville Jaguars, 1995

Carolina Panthers, 1995
